DIAGNOSIS OF DERMATOMYCOSES

Abstract
The clinical manifestation of each dermatomycosis may be distinctive and characteristic, but most of them are so varied that they simulate quite a number of other dermatoses. Therefore, the definite diagnosis can be made through the specific mycological techniques such as Wood¢¥s lamp examination, direct microscopic examination under KOH mount, and culture on Sabouraud¢¥s dextrose agar at room temperature in association with their clinical features.
Author described the clinical characteristics and the laboratory identification of each dermatomycosis essential for their diagnosis and for their differentiation from other similar dermatoses. Some of the dermatomyses such as tinea capitis, tinea barbae, and tinea versicolor may be diagnosed preferably by the production of fluorescent light on Wood¢¥s lamp examination. However, non fluorescence does not always exclude the infection and needed further examination. The most reliable mycological examination is the detection and or identification of causative organism ¢¥in the specimens (hair, nail, scale, and discharge) obtained from clinically suspected lesions. For this purpose, direct microscopic examination is simple but culture examination is imperative for the definite indentification of causative organism.
